There are approximately 1.1 million people of Indian descent in Canada out of it's total population of 32.57 million (2006 census). More than 50% of these Indo-Canadians reside in the areas under the jurisdiction of this Consulate.

Indo-Canadians have successfully integrated themselves into Canadian society while preserving and promoting their distinct cultural and linguistic heritage and maintaining close links with India . Several successful Indo-Canadians hold key positions in banking & financial sector, in IT, engineering , auto-parts manufacturing, business enterprises , hospitality, etc. The other professions in which they have excelled include academics , consultancy, medicine & healthcare and transportation & trucking industry. The political influence of Indo-Canadians in the Canadian political arena is also substantial.

Some important Indo-Canadian groups and organisations like the Canada India Foundation (CIF), India-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), Canada-India Business Council (C-IBC), and Panorama-India have become successful public advocacy forums for promoting India-Canada relations and in advocating the interests of the Indo-Canadian community .
